Menopausal Skin Changes

Treatment for menopausal skin changes at Gambhir M.D. on Central Park South, New York City uses Sculptra, Thermage FLX, HALO Tribrid, microneedling, dermal filler, and Botox.

Estrogen does a great deal of quiet work in the skin. It supports collagen, helps the skin hold water, and contributes to the fat and bone that give a face its shape. As estrogen falls through perimenopause and after, collagen is lost faster than at any other point in adult life. The skin becomes thinner, drier, and less elastic, and the changes are often read as sudden — the jawline softens, the cheeks flatten, fine lines become set, and skin that was oily for decades turns dry. Much of this begins years before periods stop. At our New York City practice, we will tell you which of these changes we can genuinely help with, which belong with your own physician, and what is worth starting now rather than later.

Services

Sculptra

Sculptra prompts your body to rebuild its own collagen over months rather than filling space. That makes it the most direct answer to the problem here, which is collagen being lost faster than it is made. It is a series of treatments, and the change is gradual enough that people around you tend not to notice a day when something happened.

HALO Tribrid

HALO is a hybrid fractional laser, and the reason it belongs on this page is that it works at two depths at once. The surface treatment addresses tone, texture and the sun damage that becomes more visible as skin thins; the deeper, non-ablative portion heats the dermis and drives new collagen over the months afterward. For skin that is thinning rather than simply sun-damaged, that deeper collagen response is the point. The Tribrid configuration adds a third wavelength to that combination. Expect several days of visible redness and peeling, and plan it away from anything that matters.

Thermage FLX

Thermage FLX uses radiofrequency to heat the deeper layers and tighten existing collagen while stimulating new collagen over the following months. It suits the softening along the jawline that many women notice first, and it takes one treatment with no needles and no downtime. It will not lift significantly loose skin, and we will tell you if that is what you have rather than selling you a treatment that cannot deliver it.

Microneedling – SKIN PEN

Microneedling creates controlled injury that triggers collagen production, and over a series of treatments improves firmness and skin quality. It also helps the dullness that comes with slower cell turnover.

Dermal Filler

Where volume has genuinely gone — temples, cheeks, around the mouth — filler replaces it directly, with immediate and controllable results. It also does something less obvious: the hyaluronic acid stretches the fibroblasts in the surrounding skin, and those stretched cells respond by producing new collagen of their own. So filler placed well is both an immediate correction and, over months, a contribution to the structure underneath. Used carefully and in the right places it does a great deal. Used to chase every change at once, it stops looking like you.

Botox

Lines that showed only on movement often become etched in as the skin thins. Botox softens the muscle pull that drives them. It does not address laxity or volume, and at this stage it is rarely the whole answer on its own.

Lasers – Moxi and BBL

Pigment frequently shifts in this period, and existing sun damage becomes more visible as skin thins. Moxi is gentle resurfacing for early damage and texture, with far less downtime than HALO. BBL addresses redness and brown spots.

Alastin Restorative Skin Complex

Supports the skin’s own production of collagen and elastin — the thing being lost fastest in this window.

Alastin Renewal Retinol

Encourages cell turnover and supports the skin’s structure. Used at night, started carefully, and more carefully than usual on skin that has become dry and thin.

Alastin HydraTint Pro Mineral Broad Spectrum Sunscreen SPF 36

Sun damage breaks down collagen that is already being lost faster than it is replaced.

The skin is responding to a change in the whole body, so what happens outside the office carries more weight here than it does for most concerns.

Start earlier than feels necessary

Collagen is lost fastest in the years immediately around menopause. Work done before and during that window has more to preserve than work started afterward.

Protein and strength training

Muscle and bone are lost in the same period and for the same reason, and both affect how the face sits. Resistance training and adequate protein help protect them. Your own physician can guide the specifics for you.

Change your skincare, not just your treatments

Skin that was oily at forty is often dry at fifty. The cleanser and moisturizer that suited you for twenty years may be working against you now.

Sun protection, every day

Broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher every morning, cloudy days included.

Sleep and stress

Both are frequently disrupted in this period, and both show on the skin.
