Two things matter most before Kybella: arriving well fed and well hydrated, and knowing what the next two weeks will look like.
Plan for the Swelling
- Kybella works by destroying fat cells, and your body responds with swelling.
- For some patients this is substantial, and the area under the chin can look fuller rather than slimmer for one to two weeks.
- It is normal, but it is visible.
- Do not book this treatment within three weeks of a wedding, a photograph, a presentation, or anything else that matters.
One Week Before
- If it is medically safe for you to do so, stop anything that thins the blood — with your physician’s agreement. This treatment bruises more than most, and bruising under the chin is hard to hide. Bring your full list to your visit, or call ahead, and we will go through it with you. Never stop a prescribed blood thinner on your own.
- Tell us about any previous surgery, liposuction, or other treatment to your neck or under your chin.
- Tell us if you have any difficulty swallowing.
Twenty-Four Hours Before
- No alcohol. It widens blood vessels and makes bruising worse.
- Start drinking water in earnest — at least 64 ounces.
The Day of Your Treatment
- Eat a full meal beforehand. A proper breakfast or lunch depending on your appointment time, with protein. Nausea is a recognized effect of this treatment and arriving on an empty stomach makes it far more likely.
- Keep drinking water — at least 64 ounces on the day, and more if you can.
- Arrive with no makeup on the treatment area.
- Wear a top with an open neckline. Nothing that has to be pulled over your head afterward.
- Bring a current list of your medications and supplements.
- Arrange to go home rather than back to work if you can. Most people are fine, but some feel unwell afterward.
Tell Us Before We Begin If Any of These Apply
- You are pregnant, think you may be pregnant, or are breastfeeding.
- You have any difficulty swallowing.
- You have a bleeding or clotting disorder.
- You have an infection or open area near the treatment site.
- You have had surgery or another treatment to the neck or chin area.
- You have a history of keloid or raised scarring.
- You are unwell today. If you are ill, call us and we will move your appointment. There is no charge for that.
